Immune boosters to blast away winter colds

Winter is at its height. Cases of the flu are on a sharp rise. What can you do to blast away winter colds and boost your immune system?

The immune system’s job is to seek out disease causing pathogens and destroy them with antibodies.

“Eating a healthy balanced diet is the best way to support the immune system and help it produce infection fighting antibodies,” Doctor Kin Lee said.

Try adding these immune boosting foods to your diet.

1. Blueberries. Contain flavonoids – essential to respiratory health. 2. Dark chocolate. Contains theobromine – protects the body from free radicals. (Free radicals can damage the body’s cells and may contribute to disease.) 3. Turmeric. Contains curcumin – may reduce inflammation. 4. Oily fish. Contains omega-3 – may reduce the risk of rheumatoid arthritis. 5. Broccoli. Contains vitamin C and sulforaphane – good for overall immune-boosting. 6. Sweet potatoes. Contain beta carotene (a source of vitamin A) – essential for healthy skin. 7. Spinach. Contains flavonoids, carotenoids, vitamin C & E - powerful cold-blasting properties. 8. Green tea. Contains flavonoids – may reduce the risk of a cold. 9. Almonds. Contains vitamin E and magnesium – powerful immune boosters. 10. Oranges or kiwifruit. Contains vitamin C – may reduce the duration of a common cold.

“It’s important to remember that the immune system is complex, said Doctor Lee. “Eating a healthy diet is just one way to boost immune health.”

Other ways to supercharge the immune system include:

• avoid smoking • exercising regularly • maintaining a healthy body weight • avoiding alcohol • getting enough sleep • minimising stress • good hand-washing

Anyone who gets frequent colds or other illnesses should speak to their doctor about their immune health.
